Overview

Beginning with his own reflection on the loss two of his own children, Greg Harris draws from his own experience and from the depths of Scripture to uncover the promises of God in the midst of suffering. This moving study reveals a larger conception of God’s promises and purposes, and serves as a reminder that God’s promises transcend—yet speak to—the reality of pain and suffering in the present world.

Top Highlights

“In essence, the gist of most of our prayers could be summarized as follows: freedom to do what we want financially, with the good health to enjoy life, while also being respected and envied by others—if not for what we do or who we are, at least for what we have.” (Page 28)

“Answered prayers of a deeper walk or deeper blessings are not so much a matter of God giving these to us as much as it is for Him to bring us to the point where we can receive them.” (Page 20)

“Is Jesus worth it to get out of bed a few minutes earlier just so you can spend time with Him alone? Are you able to review your daily schedule and see that you have spent at least as much time alone with Him as you have in frivolous activities or hobbies? Are you able to turn off the T.V. so you can go to some isolated place to pray?” (Page 34)

“In other words, one way ‘how do I know whether I am humbling myself?’ can be answered is by seeing whether you have cast all your anxiety on the Lord. This verse strongly shows that humbling is not passively giving up or a self-resignation to defeat or disaster. Casting one’s anxiety is an active statement of faith.” (Page 134)

“If you are to continue on your own road to Troas with the Lord, you must purpose in your heart you will continue with Him no matter what, and you need to purpose it before you go very far. If you fail to do so, the steepness of the ascents—and descents—will turn you back rather quickly.” (Page 45)

. . . Authentically expresses the bright hope of God’s eternal glory that places even the darkest cup of earthly pain in perspective. Whether you now suffer, or comfort those who do, this is a must read.

—John MacArthur

. . . A careful and penetrating study born from the heart of a pastor/theologian. This book will challenge, convict and comfort those who enter in.

—Danny Akin, President, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary

When all of life falls apart, this is a great reminder of how God puts it all together, and ultimately, that our hope rests by being with him forever in glory.

—Greg Hattesberg, Director of Admissions; Faculty, Bible Exposition, Dallas Theological Seminary

Harris’ humility as an author causes us to stand in awe before the presence of the glory of God.

—Georg Huber, National Director, Precept Ministries International
