Overview

Two enemies of the evangelical church today are intellectualism and legalism. The former exalts the mind to the exclusion of the heart, whereas the latter stresses outward conformity rather than inward transformation. Gnosticism elevates knowledge above faith, while ecclesiastical traditionalism suppresses grace with laws. In most situations, these errors are found separately; however, they were joined in the heresy which affected the church at Colosse. Paul attacked these two errors through the exposition of true spiritual wisdom and of the believer’s positional completeness in Christ. In studying Colossians, therefore, you will see how a submissive life of faith and grace is the only spiritual experience which will glorify Christ.

“Faith comes first, then love. Vertical faith precedes horizontal love, because love is the outworking of faith.” (Page 34)

“The term ‘saints’ embraces all four aspects of the verb ‘to sanctify.’ These aspects are the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the person’s life before conversion (Gal. 1:15; 2 Thess. 2:13), the time of regeneration (1 Cor. 1:2; 6:11; Heb. 10:14), the present cleansing and edifying ministry of the Christian by the Spirit through the Word of God (John 17:17), and the total separation from the effects of sin when the believer receives the incorruptible, immortal body (Eph. 5:26–27).” (Page 25)

“It clearly sets forth the eternal deity of Jesus Christ, the physical reality of His incarnation, His direct creation of the total universe, His death and resurrection, and His ontological relationship to the Father.” (Page 57)

“Even the religious critics of Christ knew that He was making a claim of a unique relationship to God, an assertion tantamount to blasphemy, in their opinion, because it suggested equality with God (John 5:17–18).” (Pages 31–32)

“Quite possibly, he might have been the pastor of the Colossian church in the absence of Epaphras.” (Page 173)
