Overview

Dr. Gangel's commentary lifts up the historical significance and timeless truths of this pivotal Gospel. John writes to an audience that has had at least fifty years of church history. Christianity has made its impact on the Mediterranean world. This gospel focuses on Jesus’ teaching, with the hope that those who read or hear it would have the same knowledge and faith that John’s personal experience had given him.

“Nicodemus demonstrates that religious training without spiritual insight is useless.” (Page 49)

“Verse 16 tells us that God gave his Son, verse 17 explains why, and verse 18 emphasizes the result.” (Page 55)

“One thing is clear at the outset of the chapter: this is not a passage on salvation, a topic John covered in earlier chapters. Here he dealt with requirements for a fruitful life on the part of believers.” (Page 283)

“In this passage we find one of the strongest worship statements in the New Testament. Ten of John’s thirteen uses of the Greek word for worship appear in these few verses. We learn immediately that place is irrelevant and that worship is not primarily in body—through physical motions and activities—but in spirit. The text does not refer to the Holy Spirit but an attitude of heart which acknowledges God and his sovereignty over our lives. Furthermore, worship must be done in truth—honestly, biblically, centered on Christ. This paragraph shows the difference between religion and the gospel: religion describes humankind’s search for God; the gospel describes the way God reached down to humanity.” (Page 77)

“God sent his light into the world, but mankind did not understand it, could not grasp it. But the world will never be able to defeat it.” (Page 11)
