Overview

For believers who have grown weary or disillusioned with their Christian commitment, the letter to the Hebrews offers much practical assistance. In this day of dwindling church attendance and clergy burnout, a new reading of Hebrews offers an encouraging, renewed understanding of the person and work of Jesus Christ. The letter of James deals primarily with the social and practical aspects of Christianity, reminding the reader that Christian faith touches every aspect of life. One of the most useful books in the New Testament, its concerns are grounded in day-to-day questions: how do we live? what should we live? and what are the implications of Christian faith for our lives? This epistle will challenge and encourage modern readers in search of a life of integrity.

“Second, it is important to recall Hebrews’ decidedly pastoral orientation. In 6:4–6 the author does not set forth a calm, reasoned, and definitive doctrine of repentance but seeks rather to address a serious pastoral crisis. He greatly fears that his weary readers are on the brink of disaster—on the verge of abandoning Christian faith. They must be made to see the gravity of their situation—the seriousness of what they are contemplating. Sometimes warning, rather than reassurance, is needed to bring us to our senses and alert us to danger. The author of Hebrews judges that this is not the best time for a reassuring affirmation that God’s mercy is everlasting, though this be true.” (Page 38)

“Hebrews observes that the lives of believers are to be marked by the same fidelity that distinguished the lives of Moses and Jesus.” (Page 28)

“James is not trying to evangelize the world; instead, it is calling its readers to live the Christian life” (Page 79)

“It is that characteristic of the Christian life that enables one both to persevere even in the midst of difficult circumstances and to step out into the unknown with courage and live in a risky and vigorous way.” (Page 63)

“It reminds us that our lives are not products of chance but rather are bound up with the life of God in Christ. God is indeed one in whom ‘we live and move and have our being’ (Acts 17:28).” (Page 18)
