Overview

The Landmark Movement—marked by the belief in the exclusive validity of Baptist churches and the theory of Baptist succession since apostolic times—brought sharp division amongst Baptists as it sprung up in the antebellum American south. Pastor and professor James Madison Pendleton formed one part of what was called the “Great Triumvirate” of Landmarkism, together with A.C. Dayton and J.R. Graves.

This collection presents Pendleton’s Christian Doctrines, with concise discussions of a number of theological topics, as well as the Church Manual—his guide to the definition, purpose, and activity of a Baptist church. Read the story of his life, personal and professional, in his own words with his memoir, Reminisces of a Long Life. Get a taste for his preaching style with Notes on Sermons, and examine Pendleton’s work on the distinctives of Baptists. Though the “Triumvirate” dissolved after the Civil War, Pendleton’s works offer an interesting window into the thinking behind the Landmark Movement, and into this period of Baptist history.

In this volume, J.M. Pendleton aims to bring to light the principles which distinguish Baptists from other religious denominations and explain these distinctives. Accordingly, Pendleton focuses his primary attention on the issue of baptism—first denouncing infant baptism, then arguing for the necessity of immersion and for the order of “Christ first, then the church and its ordinances.” The last distinctive Pendleton covers is the belief that biblical churches are congregations of baptized believers that is “independent, under Christ, of the state and of other church, having in itself authority to do whatever a church can of right do.”

J.M. Pendleton offers a concise case for Baptist beliefs in this work, originally prepared as a discourse for the dedication of a Baptist meeting house. Focusing on core beliefs about baptism and church government, Pendleton highlights these Baptist distinctives: believer’s baptism, full immersion, and congregational church government, and argues for their place in New Testament churches.

James Madison Pendleton (1811–1891) was an American Baptist pastor and professor. Pendleton made up one member of the “Great Triumvirate” (along with J.R. Graves and A.C. Dayton) of the Landmark Movement, which sprung up in the 1850s within the Southern Baptist Convention. Born in Virginia, Pendleton was raised in Kentucky, and was educated in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, and ordained there in 1833. He taught school and studied theology privately for several years before he became pastor of First Baptist Church in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1857, he became professor of theology at Union University, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and became an editor of the Tennessee Baptist. At the start of the Civil War, Pendleton moved to the North where he pastored churches in Ohio and Pennsylvania and was involved in founding Crozer Theological Seminary.
