Overview

Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer’s lifework, the Kritisch-Exegetische Kommentar über das Neue Testament is considered one of the best nineteenth-century New Testament commentaries. This collection presents Meyer’s valuable scholarship in the original German.

Meyer, a German Protestant with a gift for languages, modeled his commentary on the popular Keil-Delitzsch commentary. His first volume came out in 1832, and for over 40 years, Meyer balanced working on new additions to the commentary while also updating those volumes already published with multiple, serious revisions. Each book is amply introduced, including biographical information about the authors, authorship controversies, information about the times of its composition, its intended audience, and more. Each volume focuses on the Greek text, and Meyer discusses an abundance of sources and authors to illustrate meaning derived from the text. He covers historical and literary aspects, as well as a grammatical and philological study of the text. Meyer also includes important bibliographic material which was integral to his studies and research.

With the Logos edition of the Meyers Kritisch-exegetischer Kommentar über das neue Testament, references to the Church Fathers and other early and medieval texts are also linked, allowing you to click your way through the history of the church and across the theological spectrum.
