During a prolonged port detention, Haldane began studying the Bible. He decided to give up his naval career to pursue a religious life. In 1799, Haldane was ordained pastor of a large independent church in Edinburgh, which he pastored for over 50 years. Among his numerous publications are Man’s Responsibility, The Doctrine and Duty of Self Examination, The Doctrine of Atonement, and Notes Intended for an Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews.
