Overview
William Trollope’s two volume Analecta Theologica, originally published in 1842, is a compendium of the most highly-respected commentaries of his day, created to provide a streamlined tool for students approaching critical study of the New Testament. Unable to find such a resource to aid his own study of Scripture, Trollope decided to set about creating his own. The two volumes of this collection are the result of his toils. “It appeared to me,” he remarks in the preface, “that by collecting into one point of view the several opinions of the best Commentators . . . condensed into as small a compass as was consistent with perspicuity, and exhibiting the relative weight of the arguments by which they were supported . . . [t]he student would be presented with a comprehensive digest of the criticism, philology, and exposition of the sacred text, and enabled to judge of the merits of each particular comment . ..” Trollope’s classic remains a highly useful study and is a valuable addition to any library.
