Overview

The Books of 1 and 2 Timothy shed the light of God into such shadowy corners of church life as false doctrine, disorder in worship, the need for qualified leaders, and materialism. These issues are as vital and frustrating for church leaders today as they were for young Timothy. So this study will be like reading a letter from Paul to us that was written yesterday.

Top Highlights

“Paul is teaching that even though a woman bears the stigma of being the initial instrument who led the race into sin, women may be preserved or freed from that stigma by raising a generation of godly children (see 5:10).” (Page 28)

“A ‘one-woman man’ is one totally devoted to his wife, maintaining singular devotion, affection, and sexual purity in both thought and deed. To violate this is to forfeit blamelessness and no longer be ‘above reproach’ (Titus 1:6–7).” (Page 36)

“This epistle does, however, express many important theological truths, such as the proper function of the law (1:5–11), salvation (1:14–16; 2:4–6); the attributes of God (1:17); the Fall (2:13–14); the person of Christ (3:16; 6:15–16); election (6:12); and the second coming of Christ (6:14–15).” (Page 3)

“Paul’s purpose in writing this letter was to instruct Timothy regarding the church (vv. 14–15). Of primary importance to any church is that its leaders be qualified to teach and that they set an example for the flock.” (Page 34)

“Women are to be silent by not teaching, and they are to demonstrate submission by not usurping the authority of the pastors or elders.” (Page 28)
