Overview

The seven works of Saint Augustine in this volume all deal with the problem of faith in God. They were written over the course of about three decades, beginning with True Religion (390) and extending to The Enchiridion on Faith, Hope and Charity (c. 421). Therefore, this selection of writings provides an impressive insight into the intellectual and spiritual development of one of the greatest of all Western minds, as it grappled with a question that has never ceased to preoccupy and stimulate Western thought: Is it reasonable to believe in God, and what form might such belief take? This volume presents new translations of True Religion, The Advantage of Believing, Faith and the Creed, Faith in the Unseen, Demonic Divination, Faith and Works, and The Enchiridion on Faith, Hope and Charity.

“true religion is characterized by an inseparable combination of worship, doctrine, and morality” (Page 20)

“Those, however, who take care in passing through the successive ages one by one, stage by stage, neither find the tares any problem nor feel horrified by the husks.109 The godless person, after all, lives for the godly, and the sinner for the just, so that, in contrast with them, these may grow more briskly until they are ripe.” (Page 63)

“If, on the other hand, they are bothered by the fact that in the Old Testament the precepts of life are less demanding and in the New Testament more so,72 and that’s why they think that both cannot derive from one and the same God, then those who think like this could be worried by one and the same doctor’s administering some remedies through his attendants to his weaker patients and others by his own hand to the stronger ones, for restoring or obtaining health.” (Page 50)

“there is not one thing called philosophy, that is devotion to wisdom, and another called religion” (Page 22)

“how human beings are to be made fit for this worship of God by means of the life they live.” (Page 25)

Aurelius Augustinus (354–430) is often simply referred to as St. Augustine or Augustine Bishop of Hippo (the ancient name of the modern city of Annaba in Algeria). He is the preeminent Doctor of the Church according to Roman Catholicism, and is considered by Evangelical Protestants to be in the tradition of the Apostle Paul as the theological fountainhead of the Reformation teaching on salvation and grace.
