The Concise Bible Commentary is the best one volume commentary by a single author that I have ever read. I have used this commentary extensively throughout my ministries. I consulted it whenever I preached a sermon or had a question on the argument of a book of the Bible. Robert Hughes was my professor in Seminary and changed the way I interpreted Scripture forever. He has a keen grasp of the Scriptures as a whole and is able to piece together each portion of Scripture into a literary whole. Hughes provides the big picture of the Scripture by giving what he calls guiding concepts. These are Bible wide themes. These help the reader develop a biblical theology of the Old and New Testaments. Carl Laney contributed the geographical portions of the commentary which help the reader visualize the context and setting of each book. I would recommend this book for the student who wants to study every book of the Bible systematically under the umbrella of the biblical theology of the kingdom of God. The biblical theology of each book is presented and difficult passages are addressed with occasional alternative points of view. Every pastor should have this book in his library as a starting point for his study and exposition of the Scripture. Layman can also benefit from this book and get a seminary education wrapped up inside this concise commentary of the Scriptures. If I had to choose one book in my library, this would be the one.
