Overview

Studies in Ephesians is a fantastic complement to Mullins' guide to Colossians. As with Studies in Colossians, it contains a concise study guide as well as review questions and a note to pastors and professors who may be using the resource.

“Grace is the central fact of the gospel, the key to its meaning. The essential and primary meaning of the word ‘grace’ is underserved favor bestowed by a superior upon an inferior. In the gospel, it is that active and energetic love of God which, in and through Christ, clothed itself in human form, and continues now to work for man’s redemption. ‘Peace’ is the result of the action of this grace of God in the human heart.” (Page 27)

“‘Children of wrath’ would mean, then, children in danger of the wrath of God.” (Page 62)

“Sainthood in the New Testament arises through faith in Jesus Christ” (Page 27)

“‘According to the prince of the powers of the air.’ The word ‘powers’ is an inaccurate translation. It is given correctly in the Canterbury revision. It is a singular, not a plural, word: ‘prince of the power of the air’ is the correct rendering. Prince, of course, means chief ruler. In John 12:31; 14:30, and 16:11, there are similar references. Satan is the prince of the power of the air. ‘Power of the air’ is an expression meaning perhaps in a collective sense the powers of the air. These powers are thought of as a single power, although there may be many individual powers included. The air was thought of as the sphere of activity of the evil powers. It is their dwelling place, as it were.” (Page 60)

“God will place on exhibition through future ages the achievements of his love in and through Christ. What he is now doing is not a mere incident, a subordinate part in some larger plan. It is the plan itself. It is not the variation but the theme itself. It will therefore be kept to the front as his chief work in coming ages. Other plans he has, no doubt, but none of them will eclipse this or render it an insignificant part. For through the church he is to show ‘the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us’ (verse 7).” (Page 64)

Edgar Young Mullins, who was perhaps the most pivotal figure in twentieth century Southern Baptist life, deserves notice.
