“But then shortly thereafter things began to go sour with Saul, for he rebelled against God. It started when he would not wait for Samuel to come to Gilgal to make the appointed sacrifice but did the forbidden and made the sacrifice himself.” (Page 17)

“After David was anointed by Samuel, a number of years (some say at least fifteen years) passed before David actually became king; but those years were not idle or wasted years. During those years many events transpired which helped to train and prepare David for the throne.” (Page 43)

“This was the first of three anointings for David as king of Israel. The other two anointings occurred when he became king at Hebron over part (the tribe of Judah) of Israel (2 Samuel 2:4) and when he became king over all of Israel (2 Samuel 5:3) seven years later.” (Page 15)

“Samuel ‘gets light enough for the next step, but no more … Duty opens by degrees, and the way to see farther ahead is to go as far as we can see’ (Maclaren).” (Page 28)

“In comparing verse 26 with verse 45, we discover that to defy the armies of Israel was also to defy the God of Israel.” (Page 70)
