Overview

William Hone’s Apocryphal New Testament—although controversial upon publication—became a key text on the Apocrypha in the English-speaking world of the nineteenth century. The texts were adapted from Jeremiah Jones’s 1726 translation of the Apocrypha and William Wake’s 1693 translation of the Shepherd of Hermes and the Apostolic Fathers. Hone’s volume went through numerous reprintings, and established itself as an important work on the New Testament Apocrypha.

“It escaped the Editor to notice that the legends of the Koran and the Hindoo Mythology are considerably connected with this volume. Many of the acts and miracles ascribed to the Indian God, Creeshna, during his incarnation, are precisely the same with those attributed to Christ in his infancy, by the Apocryphal Gospels, and are largely particularised by the Rev. Thomas Maurice in his learned History of Hindostan.” (Page xii)

“But, being an unparalleled instance without any pollution or defilement, and a virgin not knowing any man, shall bring forth a son, and a maid shall bring forth the Lord, who both by his grace and name and works, shall be the Saviour of the world.” (Pages 19–20)

“Her father’s name was Joachim, and her mother’s Anna. The family of her father was of Galilee and the city of Nazareth. The family of her mother was of Bethlehem.” (Pages 17–18)

“37 She then offered very large gifts to the Lady Mary, and sent her away with all imaginable respect.” (Pages 44–45)

“Alexander, bishop of Alexandria, and Arius, who was a presbyter in his diocese” (Page iii)
