Overview

From the Introduction: Sabbath means rest. The law said, “Six days may work be done, but in the seventh is the sabbath of rest.” Ex. 31:15. “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the Lord: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.” Ex. 35:2. God gave to Israel a day of rest to their bodies, a day when all manual labor was to cease. This was every seventh day. Since the seventh day was a rest day, it was called a sabbath. So in the gospel: whatever is the Christian’s rest, the same is our sabbath. I repeat, sabbath means rest. This is the one sole idea it conveys, first, last, and all the way between—cessation of work; rest.
