Overview

“It is no accident that the final book of the Bible is the last book in the collection of writings the church has warranted to be the Word of God to us mortals. The Revelation of Jesus Christ given to John sums up and focuses the Holy Spirited good news from the historical beginning of the world until it reaches an ending fulfillment. We readers are told what’s going on in heaven right now, and what we earthlings need to know and do while we still breathe.”

Being led by Calvin Seerveld through the stirring drama of God’s dumbfounding doings in the final book of the Bible is a moving, intense, and powerful experience. An encounter with these eleven sermons shakes up the reader and inspires new vigor and depth to faith and life in Jesus Christ.

—Barbara Carvill, Professor of German Emeritus, Calvin University

Calvin G. Seerveld has written a superb series of sermons from the book of Revelation. He explores not only the last book in the Bible but the entire Scriptural story in a way that enriches our understanding and empowers our ways of life. At one point in the book, he exclaims, “What an amazing, richly imaginative book God’s Bible is!” His writings increased my amazement and expanded my imagination in relation to the Bible. Any preacher who proclaims the Bible in Advent and who wants material for sermons that make us long for the coming Christ will find in this book treasures new and old.

—Joel Kok, Pastor, Christian Reformed Covenant Church, Sioux Center, Iowa

Combining his facility with biblical languages, a poetic writing style, and a pastoral heart, Cal Seerveld has served up a multi-course meal of hearty biblical exposition that directly impacts Christian discipleship. I am impressed by Seerveld’s ability to bring the vivid apocalyptic imagery of the book of Revelation to bear on our ordinary life in this broken world, taking seriously the ways in which God’s people often fail, yet engendering hope for the coming of the Lord of history to set things right.

—J. Richard Middleton, Professor of Biblical Worldview and Exegesis, Northeastern Seminary at Roberts Wesleyan College
