Overview

The study of God, His nature, and His Word are all essential to the Christian faith. Now those interested in Christian theology have a newly revised and updated reference tool in the 25th Anniversary Edition of The Moody Handbook of Theology.

In this classic and timeless one-volume resource, Paul Enns offers a comprehensive overview of the five dimensions of theology: biblical, systematic, historical, dogmatic, and contemporary. Each section includes an introduction, chapters on key points, specific studies pertinent to that theology, books for further study, and summary evaluations of each dimension. Charts, graphs, glossary, and indexes add depth and breadth. It also includes a new Foreword by John MacArthur.

Theology, once the domain of academicians and learned pastors, is now accessible to anyone interested in understanding the essentials of what Christians believe. The Moody Handbook of Theology is a concise doctrinal reference tool for newcomers and seasoned veterans alike.

Top Highlights

“The hypostatic union may be defined as ‘the second person, the preincarnate Christ came and took to Himself a human nature and remains forever undiminished Deity and true humanity united in one person forever.’” (Page 240)

“The foundational meaning of the death of Christ is its substitutionary character. He died in place of sinners that He might purchase their freedom, reconcile them to God, and thereby satisfy the righteous demands of a holy God.” (Page 335)

“Forgiveness is manward; man had sinned and needed to have his sins dealt with and removed.” (Page 339)

“The attributes of God may be defined as ‘those distinguishing characteristics of the divine nature which are inseparable from the idea of God and which constitute the basis and ground for his various manifestations to his creatures.’8 God’s attributes are to be distinguished from His works. God’s attributes do not ‘add’ anything to God; they reveal His nature.” (Page 193)

“Personality may simply be defined as possessing intellect, emotions, and will; then, by demonstrating that the Holy Spirit has intellect, emotions, and will it will be shown that He is a person and has personality.” (Page 259)

This new edition of Paul Enns' classic work is the finest yet. It's a wonderful remedy for the apathy and superficiality of the present age, and a helpful companion for the long journey toward the mature understanding of truth that Scripture urges us to pursue.

—John MacArthur, senior pastor, Grace Community Church

I have only glanced at this book. It is hard to say how good it will be but it does provide some good information and who the theologians are that cover different modern theology movements. Picking it on sale makes it worth at least a purchase and spot check. What caught my eye is the First Section. and the Breakdown of theology of the Old Testament and New Testament with their own chapters. I have always seen the Bible as the overall View on How God wants us to live our life in a Godly manner. So it will be interesting to see how these divisions are described.

Enns shows his criticism of denominations he is not part of and does not walk in love with his words. Enns does not know how to handle topics. Enns thinks singing is a spiritual gift. Handbook is disappointing.
