Overview

The literary critic and Marxist philosopher Fredric Jameson has said, “It is easier to imagine the end of the world than to imagine the end of capitalism.” Indeed, the military, social, and political effects of capitalism are felt throughout the planet. Even as we acknowledge the negative effects—imbalances of power, imperialist exploitation, social alienation—we are captivated by its message of self-sufficiency and success. In this issue, The Other Journal examines the potentially surprising intersections of Marxism with Christianity and the ways this nexus of thinking and faith may help us contend with and recognize the powers of the market.

The editors remark, “in this issue we set out to learn from the critical theories associated with Marxism as a way of demystifying the new secular powers that reign over our world. Indeed, if it is true that the emperor (or the medieval church) has been replaced by the market as the dominant structure of the day, then it is finally time to broaden the resources our theology engages in order to help us unmask the pretensions of the market’s power.” The issue features essays, reviews, an interview, fiction, creative nonfiction, poetry, and art.

Marx is posted very positively, while his teachings brought an indescribable horror over the world and still influencing numerous lives. But can we then not learn from him, of course, but we can also learn from the heretical teachings of the Cathars. Then this book had lots of articles that seemed not well connected with the topic. I missed a critical review on Marx, that's why I bought this book: The Devil and Karl Marx: Communism's Long March of Death, Deception, and Infiltration by Paul Kengor. Hopefully, this will help me to gain a deeper insight into the dangers of his teachings. I benefitted to learn something about Hugo Grotius, one of the persons that made the Netherlands a great nation. If you are looking for sound theology, this is not the work you need to consult.

It sounds like "Liberation theology". Can someone explain to me the difference, if any, before the order?
