Anna Jameson’s famous work on the history of Christian art is written with an infectious admiration and enthusiasm—this volume contains the first portion of her classic text (finished by Elizabeth Eastlake after Jameson’s death). The study details the history of Christian art, particularly through examining depictions of Christ, and biblical scenes. Rather than structure her text around artists or movements, Jameson chooses to design her text around subject matter. “The history of our Lord as represented in art, is essentially the history of Christian art,” Jameson notes. “He is always the great center and object of the scene . . . always intended, under every aspect, real or ideal, to be looked upon as God.” This first volume opens with a discussion of early symbolic forms of Christian art, covering sarcophagi, murals, mosaics, church doors, ivories, minatures, enamels, and more. The rest of the text discusses depictions of scenes from the creation of the world through the parables of the Pearl of Great Price and the Lost Coin.

Anna Brownell Jameson (1794–1860) was a British critic and writer. In her early years, she worked as a governess in the families of several British peers. She traveled around Europe and Canada, and saw much of emigrant and aboriginal life in the Lake Huron region. She published a number of respected works of criticism and memoir, writing about the art history, British galleries, her travels to North America, literature, and the situation of women in the nineteenth century. Her works include Sacred and Legendary Art, Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada, The House of Titian, and The Relative Social Position of Mothers and Governesses .

Elizabeth Rigby Eastlake (1809–1893) was born in Norwich, England. She studied art, languages, and literature in Germany. She published her first review in 1836 in the Foreign Quarterly Review and in 1841, she published her first book, A Residence on the Shores of the Baltic. She became the first woman to write regularly for the Quarterly Review. Upon the death of Anna Jameson, Eastlake was asked to complete Jameson’s The History of Our Lord as Exemplified in Works of Art.

Jameson concludes her study of the history of Christian art in this volume, examining depictions of Christ as a key to the whole of Christian art, as “the history of our Lord as represented in art, is essentially the history of Christian art.” This portion of the text begins with study of the Lord’s passion, and his entry into Jerusalem, and continues through artistic interpretations of the Last Judgment.

The two classic monographs combined in this volume discuss East Christian and Roman art history. The first is Charles R. Morey’s work on East Christian Paintings in the Freer Collection, first published in 1914. The second, written by Walter Dennison, presents “a description of 36 objects belonging to a notable gold treasure of the late Roman period found in Egypt” with descriptions “intentionally full; since the evidence at our disposal for acquaintance with the jeweller’s art of this period is comparatively meager, it was thought that the publication of a detailed study might be of interest.” The scholarly texts are vibrant with ample photographs, illustrations, diagrams, and sketches.

Charles Rufus Morey (1877–1955) was a prominent American art historian. He graduated from the University of Michigan and went on to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Rome. He then became a professor at Princeton, and went on to spend 39 years in the department of art and archaeology there. In 1924, he became chair of the department, and was named Marquand Chair of Art and Archaeology in 1938. His special area of expertise was medieval art, and he is best known for his catalogued collection of photographs known as the Index of Christian Art. Morey also helped to establish the College Art Association and The Art Bulletin.

Walter Dennison (1869–1917) studied at the University of Michigan, graduating in 1893. He was then appointed to the Elisha Jones Classical Fellowship for two years, earning his Master of Arts during that time. In 1895, he went to study in Italy at the University of Bonn and at the American School of Classical Studies. He taught Latin at the University of Michigan and Oberlin College, and was head of the departments of Latin and Greek at Swarthmore College. He published a number of textbooks and articles including “A New Head of the So-called Scipio Type: An Attempt at its Identification” in the American Journal of Archaeology.

Edward L. Cutts (1824–1901) was a church historian and Anglican minister who wrote influential biographies of several early church figures, including Jerome and Constantine. He received an honorary DD from the University of the South, Sewanee. He also wrote a volume on Saint Augustine, A Dictionary of the Church of England and Turning-Points of Church History.
