Overview

The UBS Handbooks are detailed commentaries providing valuable exegetical, historical, cultural, and linguistic information on the books of the Bible. They are prepared primarily to assist Bible translators as they carry out the important task of putting God’s Word into the many languages spoken in the world today. The text is discussed verse by verse, and is accompanied by running text in at least one modern English translation.

Over the years, church leaders and Bible readers have found the UBS Handbooks to be useful for their own study of the Scriptures. Many of the issues Bible translators must address when trying to communicate the Bible’s message to modern readers are the ones Bible students must address when approaching the Bible text as part of their own private study and devotions.

My rating is about 3.5 stars, based on two key factors: The UBS Handbooks are helpful but have their own bent on translation. Psalm titles will clearly indicate "of David" and one of the first comments in the Handbook for that Psalm will indicate skepticism that the Psalm was associated with or written by David. What is more mystifying is Logos' choice to publish handbooks for apocryphal books like Tobit and Sirach and not publish handbooks for canonical books. From reading other reviews, I can see handbooks for 6 canonical books were missing from the Logos collection in 2014. In 2022, 3 are still missing from the Logos collection: Ezekiel, Hosea, and Joel. This amounts to two handbooks missing as Hosea and Joel are contained in one handbook. But really Logos, no UBS Handbook for Ezekiel?

As is mentioned in the overview- though the Handbooks are primarily intended for Bible translators, they are useful as Scripture study guides in themselves. Indeed. When I want to study Bible verses and passages at a truly granular level, time and again I have found these to be an immense help. I do wish that every book in the Bible were covered, perhaps someday that will be the case.

So far I have only looked through the books quickly, but it looks like an excellent set with a quick read on the most important info you'll need on a book.. As always the price is pretty good considering all that the logos software does with the books for you to make the info useful. I still enjoy using the HC books themselves but as time passes I will enter more and more into using this system for it's shear connectness to all the other books in your library.. a good investement I believe..
