Ministry throws unexpected challenges at you. What if a little more training could help you navigate them successfully? Though church leaders take courses in preaching and Christian education, when do they learn about personal limitations and the benefits of intimate friendships? Or what about conflict resolution? Knowledge gaps like these are often the primary factors that lead to frustration and burnout. In What Great Ministry Leaders Get Right, Jimmy Dodd of PastorServe and Renaut van der Riet of Mosaic Church in Winter Garden, FL, outline the six core competencies church leaders need to develop healthy, biblical, and sustainable leadership. Jimmy and Renaut address the critical lessons often missing from ministry training that all leaders need to successfully serve their congregations. Whether you’ve been in the pulpit for years or are just beginning your ministry education, every pastor can make sure they’re prepared for the real-world challenges of ministry. Whether you’ve been in the pulpit for years or are just beginning your ministry education, every pastor can make sure they’re prepared for the real-world challenges of ministry. JIMMY DODD (B.A. Wheaton College; M.Div., Gordon-Conwell Seminary) is the founder and CEO of PastorServe. This organization works across denominational lines to strengthen the church by serving pastors. He is the author of Survive or Thrive, 6 Relationships Every Pastor Needs, and Pastors Are People Too, co-authored with Larry Magnuson. Jimmy and his wife Sally have five children and three grandchildren. He enjoys reading, taking walks with his wife Sally and dog Finn, and cheering on his beloved Jayhawks at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, KS. RENAUT VAN DER RIET loves to go zip-lining with his eight kids through the adventure course they built together. He walks quickly. He talks with his hands and arms. And if you find him at home, you’re likely to see him tilling soil because Brooke, his wife of 25 years, loves gardening. In 2002, Renaut founded Mosaic Church in Winter Garden, FL. It has become a nationwide pacemaker for fostering and adoption and a model for trauma care. He is also the founder of Axum Coffee Company, named after the Ethiopian city from which he and Brooke adopted four of their children. Renaut is developing The ReStory, a project aimed at providing Gospel clarity to followers of Christ and inviting them to consider how their lives might be different if they dared to believe Galatians 5:1: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.” Praise for What Great Ministry Leaders Get Right. “In my 30+ years of working with pastors around the world, I’ve never seen this level of personal anxiety and insecurity, as we face the challenges and pressures of this kairos moment. It’s an important guide for any ministry leader who wants to do great work, not for their own glory, but for the glory of God and His coming kingdom.” —ED STETZER Executive Director of the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College. “Anyone in leadership learns quickly that people are usually eager to identify what you’re doing wrong. Compliments are harder to come by; solid, time-tested advice for what works best is rarer still. Whether you’ve been leading for years or are just starting out, you’ll find treasures of wisdom in these pages that will strengthen your ministry and help you serve better.” —JIM DALY President, Focus on the Family. “What struck me most powerfullyin reading What Great Ministry Leaders Get Right was its honesty. Honesty often becomes the victim of therapeutic sentimentalism. This was different. It takes standards and accountability seriously. I thought the chapter on rest, pace of life, and burnout was worth getting the book. This book will improve a lot of pastors’ lives, and their families will benefit greatly.” —BILL HULL Cofounder, The Bonhoeffer Project Author of Conversion & Discipleship: You Can’t Have One without the Other. “When ministry leaders fall, the consequences for churches and Christians are painful and destructive. When ministry leaders lead well, churches so often thrive. Paul tells Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:16 to “watch [his] life and doctrine closely” (NIV). Renaut and Jimmy’s new and excellent book is a clear roadmap for applying Paul’s wise advice. I am thrilled to commend this book to every ministry leader. I encourage you not only to read it carefully but also to live out the excellent advice of these two veteran ministry leaders!” —BRIAN HOWARD Executive Director, Acts 29. “In What Great Ministry Leaders Get Right, Jimmy and Renaut intertwine practical advice and his own easy-to-follow core steps to create a must-read for anyone needing guidance on their own personal calling in life. This book will leave a lasting impression on the reader and equip you with the necessary tools to build a legacy worth leaving.” —JOE WHITE President of Kanakuk Kamps. “As one who is passionate about the experience of resiliency among pastors, I find this book incredibly helpful. But even now, as I approach that half-century mark, I can say that this book was a true blessing and encouragement. Dodd and van der Riet destroy the ministry idol of leaders appearing to have it all together and restore a biblical understanding of whole-life discipleship and servant leadership deeply rooted in the gospel and example of Jesus. As president of a seminary seeking to equip students with this ethos and practice, I heartily recommend it as an outstanding tool for students before, during, and after their time in seminary.” —MARK L. DALBEY President and Associate Professor of Applied Theology at Covenant Seminary. “Jimmy Dodd and Renaut van der Riet have provided a terrifically practical and yet comprehensive resource for ministry leaders. This is the stuff of real life, not the stuff of seminary. Read through this resource prayerfully. Where do you sense God affirming your current way of life? Where might you sense God highlighting areas that might be most important for you to address? Let the rubber meet the road on these six core competencies. Your life and ministry may well depend on it.” —MINDY CALIGUIRE Cofounder of Soul Care and author of Discovering Soul Care.
