In historical Greece and the ancient city of Olympia, where the first Olympic Games were held, a flame was lit from the sun’s rays, ensuring the purity of the fire. The flame burned permanently on the altars of Zeus and Hera, in front of the very site where the Olympic flame is lit even now in modern times.
Now go back even further to more than 2,000 years ago when another light lit up the sky over the small village of Bethlehem. It was not sent to announce the beginning of any Olympic Games but to announce the birth of the Light of the world—Jesus Christ—who would light a flame in the hearts of all who would look to Him as their personal champion, winning the victory for them over sin and death and hell. That eternal Light still burns brightly in the hearts of all who have carried its torch from one generation to the next ... the torch of Christ through mentoring, coaching, and discipling...
“I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” (John 12:46)
