The Golden Cord takes readers on a journey through Saint John Chrysostom's teaching on the Christian family. Coupling his spiritual wisdom with insights from some of the greatest modern thinkers, The Golden Cord invites thoughtful parents and teachers to delve deeper into the treasury of their ancient Christian heritage. Faith, tradition, and contemporary thought do not always have to be at odds. The author explores how current and ancient sources can agree on the subject of how the Christian family can grow together in virtue and stand firm against the powerful antichristian forces that move through secular society. This exploration focuses on three key elements of St. John's pedagogy for the family: spiritual exercise, imitation, and story-telling.
“The important lesson this clear and thoughtful book teaches is
that the moral education of the child is the work of family and
church, and that story is at the heart of this education.
. . . Saint John Chrysostom is a loadstar because he
understood that the family is itself an ecclesial entity and that
all children are disciples of Christ under the vocation of
Christian parenthood.”
—Vigen Guroian, author of Tending the Heart of Virtue: How
Classic Stories Awaken a Child’s Moral Imagination
“Many Christian parents today are dismayed to hear from
their children that they reject the faith in which they were
raised. . . . In this work, Kristin Vargas tackles this
problem head on, providing parents concrete and expertly informed
guidance on how to raise children who will think and live
Christianly. . . . She reconceives the meaning of the
family as the ‘domestic church’ in a deeply thought-provoking and
upbuilding way.”
—Charles Bellinger, author of Othering: The Original Sin of
Humanity
“Kristin Vargas offers an intriguing exploration and application of
John Chrysostom’s ethic. Taking us back to the patristic era while
maintaining an eye to contemporary family life, Vargas implores us
to rethink spiritual formation within the family. . . .
The Golden Cord is worthy of our time and will inspire us to
think deeply about the importance of training our families from a
historic Christian perspective.”
