Wisdom, Faith, and Service captures the essence of the institutional vocation and mission of Bushnell University from its founding in 1895. The Bushnell Saga--past, present, and future--is shaped and framed by the individual "wisdom, faith, and service sagas" of Bushnell People--women, men, professors, students, alumni, administrators, and countless friends--whose own vocational callings have contributed to and benefited from the saga of this institution. In this book, current Bushnell People reflect theologically and practically on the university's mission and share the stories of other Bushnell People whose lives embody the high calling of wisdom, faith, and service.
“Wisdom, Faith, and Service is the inspiring saga of Bushnell University, a Christian college founded in the nineteenth century whose administrators, faculty, and alumni have not abandoned their Christian roots during the past five generations. This is an enlightening story of how wisdom, faith, and service came to define and personify the institutional vocation and mission of a thriving Christian educational institution in the twenty-first century.”
—Jerry Rushford, curator, Rushford Center and the Churches of Christ Heritage Collection University Libraries, Pepperdine University
“Colleges and universities are increasingly aware that the circumstances under which they were founded—typically more than a century ago—are very different from the contexts in which they operate today. This book provides a welcome model of how an academic institution might come to terms with this reality by reframing the narratives that situate it within its history and call it into the future. Every institution has much to learn from these thoughtful essays.”
—David S. Cunningham, executive director, Network for Vocation in Undergraduate Education (NetVUE), Council of Independent Colleges
“The ‘Bushnell Saga’—what a creative and powerful way to tell the story of Christian higher education in Eugene, Oregon! Editors Agam Iheanyi-Igwe and Dennis Lindsay masterfully weave multiple stories with heroic deeds that claim the past, bring clarity to the present, and will ‘likely shape the future.’ This book is a ‘must-read’ for anyone who has been a part of this unique campus and who has there been empowered with a vision to serve.”
—Marvin Eckfeldt, former member of the Bushnell University Board of Trustees
