Desire for beauty is at the heart of human existence. Some find this meaning out of their religious or spiritual perspective. Some find it at the edge of their traditions. And others find it outside any recognizable tradition. This book speaks especially to the second and third groups of people.
Desire releases us to explore difference, and to honor alternatives. Desire shapes our lives in unique ways. It centers our energies for personal and relational change, where difference can be debated, and variety permitted. We might transcend circumstances that limit us. Desire is more than "meaningfulness," it is captivation of mind and spirit to life's possibility. In my discovery, desire is an abandonment to beauty.

“Memoir, but much more than memoir, William Lawton’s Leave Love with Me belongs to that genre of introspective Christian writing that has given us such classics as Augustine’s Confessions. The voice of a mature and reflective Christian, tried by life and encounter with ‘the other,’ Leave Love with Me offers readers an aid to (re-)finding God and (re-)connecting with the Jesus-story amid the radically changing physical and human environments of our times.”

—Geoffrey R. Treloar, research fellow, The Australian College of Theology

“A gifted theologian and teacher, William Lawton has a singular knack for finding words for the ineffable. He shows us here, in this moving meditation on desire, to do as Rilke said, and learn to ‘live the questions.’ This paean to the beauty of humanity from a ‘village priest and local shaman’ is provoking and comforting in equal measure. It will stay with me for a long time.”

—Julia Baird, author of Phosphorescence

“Beautifully told, and as much a work of poetic beauty as it is a story about what life can hold, Leave Love with Me is a colorful, sensitive, and captivating publication. With strongly ‘other person centered’ themes such as forgiveness and acceptance, it is difficult to imagine any reader emerging from these pages without them being gently challenged to think about fresh perspectives on life itself.”

—Mitchell Landrigan, adjunct professor of law, University of Technology

William Lawton was formerly dean of students and head of the History Department at Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia. Subsequently, he coordinated street ministry among adolescent sex workers, and marginalized people while also being Chaplain at SECGGS Anglican School for Girls. He supervised PhD students in Australian social justice studies. For the next eight years he was national chaplain and ethics adviser with a major charity. This included visiting First Nations people in their communities.
