Johannes Hofinger, S.J., was a prolific writer and was widely published in Latin, German, Chinese, French, Spanish, and English, penning books, articles and even pamphlets. Most of his writings and lectures were directed at religious education practitioners in parishes, dioceses and Catholic schools—pastors, religious women and laity. He was one of the more influential forces in Catholic religious education or catechesis from the late 1950s until his death. Hofinger devoted most of his creative energy to organizing the theologians and bishops calling for a major Catholic renewal in the 1950s and 1960s, then disseminating the ideas of these scholars and leaders, as well as the vision of the international council of renewal of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965).
