Overview

How do we understand the Holy Spirit?

Though countless Christians through the ages have confessed “I believe in the Holy Spirit,” the Spirit has often remained an elusive figure, relegated to the fringes of many Christians’ faith. Yet the charismatic movement made the Holy Spirit the focus of heated controversy. In this second edition of his widely popular book, Michael Green explains the biblically rooted doctrine of the Holy Spirit. He also discusses baptism and the gifts of the Spirit and addresses the dynamic, ongoing work of the Spirit today. Enriched by Green’s extensive pastoral and personal experience, I Believe in the Holy Spirit remains one of the most readable and balanced books on the third person of the Trinity.

—Reformed Review

Michael Green is always worth reading, and this goes for his I Believe in the Holy Spirit. It treats virtually every aspect of the Holy Spirit, along with a chapter on the charismatic movement. . . . Lots of solid material.

—Restoration Review

Green is a scholar with a remarkable gift for lucid and lively exposition of great Christian matters. . . . He has put all Christian readers most deeply in his debt.

Michael Green (1930–2019) was one of the best-known British evangelical theologians and preachers of his generation. A scholar with degrees from the universities of Oxford, Cambridge, and Toronto, Green had a passion for evangelism and a rare talent for communicating complex ideas in easy-to-understand language. In 1996, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey granted Green a Lambeth degree of Doctor of Divinity. He led university missions on six continents, pastored St. Aldate's Church Oxford, and introduced innovative approaches in seminary education. He authored more than seventy books across a range of fields, including evangelism, apologetics, biblical commentary, and academic theology.
