The white privilege phenomenon arguably began when European countries started to colonize Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands. White privilege is built on the twin towers of European colonizers exploiting their colonies' human resources and stealing their natural resources to build up their ill-gotten wealth. Structured into their system, white privilege perpetuates white supremacy. Horrible examples of white privilege are mentioned to show how white people dehumanized races in their colonies and stole their natural resources. White privilege continues today in many parts of the world in various ways.

White privilege is a heresy because it is anti-Bible. It is blind to the fact that the iniquities of the colonizing fathers live on today in the very structures and systems governing the world. It is an apostasy because it clearly denies the doctrine that all humans are created in God's image.

White Privilege in Transition is a frank assessment of the damage white privilege has done. In a persuasive, nonjudgmental way, this work invites practitioners of white privilege to accept the fact that competition and survival today take place on a level playing field.

“I happily endorse this book written by my long-lasting good colleague, Yeow Choo Lak. We shared many happy times together, and I have known him to be a good thinker and writer. He has made a good contribution in the past to theology and continues to do so in this his latest book. You will enjoy reading him.”

—Lee Soo Ann, National University of Singapore, emeritus

White Privilege in Transition provides a unique perspective about changing global values, from white supremacy to diversity and inclusion. His historic, religious, sociological, theological, and psychological viewpoints bring excitement to his many stories, arguing for racial diversity and utilization of racial talents. It is an insightful book with a valuable message. A must-read.”

—Charles Petranek, University of Hawai’i

“White privilege has bred white Christian nationalism here in the United States of America for over five hundred years. In this volume, Choo Lak Yeow takes white privilege head on and names it a heresy when it comes to theology. Writing in his usual affable style, he recounts the damage that white privilege has inflicted on people and provides his theological perspective to why and how all of us need to be healed from white privilege.”

—Kah-Jin Jeffrey Kuan, Claremont School of Theology

“To the urgent analysis of white supremacy as a Christian heresy, Choo Lak Yeow brings the fresh voice of a global-pacific theologian seasoned in pastoral and academic settings. Yeow has an unrivalled breadth of perspective on global Christianity in the Pacific Rim, and from this perspective he throws new light on polarization in American society and on wider multicultural issues of domination and reparation in our world. The book combines incisive critique with an unpretentious, infectious, constructive spirit.”

—S. Mark Heim, Andover Newton Seminary

White Privilege in Transition addresses the fundamental undercurrent of racism which has disrupted the ecology of the human community, the oikos of God all through the centuries. Peppered with historical narratives and biblical-theological notes and substantiated by the author’s experience, this is a useful resource for theological institutions.”

—Limuel Equina, executive director, Association for Theological Education in South East Asia

“Choo Lak Yeow is both courageous and gentle as he reveals the global impact of white privilege as a heresy with clarity, and utilizes island traditions that promise healing and hope to both the perpetrators and victims of that privilege. I invite you not only to read this remarkable work, but also to put into practice the teachings he graciously offers.”

—John C. Dorhauer, general minister and president, United Church of Christ, USA

“Colonialism’s effects even trickle down into the individual psyche, family, and small group interaction. Hawai’i’s plantation mentality [luna overseers] has fostered a gossipy culture that cannot speak openly but will complain privately.”

—Sharon Inake, author of Pule ‘Ohana: Native Hawaiian Family Devotions Descended from Puritan New England

White Privilege in Transition offers a bold Christian critique of racism in the US and British Commonwealth, written from the vantage point of one who grew up in colonial Singapore, then studied in Great Britain and the mainland US, before coming to multiethnic Hawai’i.”

—Robert K. Arakaki, Hawai’i Tokai International College

“Addressing the tangled issues of racism and white privilege, Choo Lak Yeow explores the common ground of universal Christianity—the Bible—in order to demonstrate that, for the Christian, racism and white privilege are heretical, anti-Bible, and the continuation of the ‘iniquity of the (colonizing) fathers.’ White Privilege in Transition provides an accessible reference and guide to the biblical stance against white privilege as well as surveying the legacy of those colonizing attitudes still at work in the world.”

—David K. Popham, conference minister, Hawai’i Conference UCC

Choo Lak Yeow, a former British subject from Singapore, writes on his experiences of, and exposure to, white privilege. Educated in Singapore, England, and America, his thirty-year ministry in theological education has taken him to fifty-nine countries. Eleven years in the parish ministry in Malaysia and America plus three years of the Touch-a-Heart beach-and-park ministry to the houseless in Waianae, O`ahu have contributed much to his diplomatic treatment of white privilege transitioning to a color-blind meritocratic playing field.
