No one likes to think about dying, but it's a reality of life that all of us have to deal with, sooner or later. It seems logical that if Christianity is true and Jesus is real, then he would have wanted us to know for sure where we are going after death. This book takes the words attributed to Jesus in the Bible and provides a logical explanation for creation, giving the reader a way to know for sure if they are bound for heaven or bound for hell. The thirteen chapters are thirteen sermons that start at the beginning of every spiritual journey ("Why am I here?") and take the reader on a logical journey that ends with a way for the reader to know what their true spiritual condition is. The purpose of the book is to explain the gospel in logical language and then offer Jesus' words as proof of the authenticity or falsehood of the reader's conversion experience by the presence or absence of four basic character traits about which Jesus taught frequently. If you read the book, by the last page you will know for sure.

How to Know for Sure is based on thirteen sermons that together provide a summary of biblical teachings. Like all good sermons, each one is filled with vivid illustrations, humor, and surprising insights. Dave Richardson believes that while salvation is a gift of grace, our assurance of salvation depends on how committed we are to live by four qualities of Jesus’ life: (1) acting in selfless love, (2) forgiving unconditionally, (3) showing kindness to all, and (4) financial generosity. Every believer will profit from this book.”

—D. Thomas O’Connor, honorably retired, Presbyterian Church USA

“In How to Know for Sure, Dave Richardson provides a substantive and well-documented treatment of what it really means to be a follower of Jesus that goes beyond the prooftexting checklist of biblical beliefs that are usually given to assure the ‘security of the believer’ by challenging the body of Christ with the notion that we can and should expect to see evidence in our daily lives and attitudes that Jesus truly has given us a new heart and lives in us.”

—Michael C. Stephens, former area minister, WV Baptist convention

Dave E. Richardson is currently the pastor of The Journey on Park Avenue in Parkersburg, West Virginia. He lives in nearby Ohio with his wife, Pam, as he has for the past fifty years. He got his MDiv in 2006 and his doctorate of marriage and family counseling in 2010. He has served churches in Wingett Run, Ohio; Oak Hill, West Virginia; Stilwell, Kansas; and Rushville, Indiana.
