George Lisle: A Faith That Couldn't Be Denied documents the pioneers of a nation. Three generations of men and women who, led and inspired by the ministry of George Lisle, advocated for a nation, from enslavement to emancipation and beyond. This work offers insight into a people and a movement who, in facing the most heinous and violent conditions, demonstrated boldness, bravery, self-sacrifice, and faith beyond measure as they sought to achieve freedom for generations of people who they knew they would never meet.
“In this study of George Lisle and his contemporaries, Doreen Morrison has demonstrated that the modern Christian missionary movement owes more to African American Christianity than has previously been acknowledged.”
—Horace O. Russell, Palmer Theological Seminary, emeritus
“Those who have an interest in or think they already know about the origins of Christianity in the Caribbean island of Jamaica simply must read this book. Conventional belief has attributed these origins to the work of European mission activity, and while this is partially correct, it is mostly wrong because it overlooks the heavy lifting of enslaved and freed Africans. Doreen Morrison’s work goes a long way toward rectifying this mistake, as well it should.”
—Douglas R. Sharp, author of No Partiality: The Idolatry of Race and the New Humanity
“This book presents the hitherto untold history of the Baptist leaders in Jamaica and their founder George Lisle. It is a fascinating and sometimes disturbing story of the struggle for liberation from slavery under a repressive colonial regime. I recommend its reading for anyone interested in the history of slavery and the role of the church in overcoming it.”
—Allan H. Anderson, University of Birmingham, emeritus
“In this book, Doreen Morrison makes a vital contribution to Baptist studies. Her scholarly research into the life and work of George Lisle and the Ethiopian Baptist Society illumines a foundational but sadly forgotten chapter in Baptist history. I highly commend the work for the significant insight it offers into a long overlooked and undervalued thread of Baptist life and identity.”
—Robert E. Johnson, Central Baptist Theological Seminary
