When the Heart Zooms In is a poetry book about the author's personal journeys across three places, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United States, that touch his deepest heart. The title represents how he looks at himself and things in a deeper way, which involves dichotomies of feelings that he expresses in each poem, such as sadness and happiness, disappointment and optimism, beast and beauty, and hopelessness and hopefulness. All of these feelings cover various topics, which are mostly about places, nature, gender identity, affection, and mental health. This poetry is personal, yet worth sharing to promote expressivism and mental health, for the author believes in "caring by sharing." There are fifty-five poems in this book using the five senses with a heart and mind. It is hoped that readers can relate the poems to their lives and know that they are not alone.

“Arisandy’s poems range from the charming (his ode to his desk) to the heart-rending (his poem to his mother, whom he must leave) to the insightful (‘First name unknown is a fact of an unknown mind’). But all are filled with arresting images: to his mother, ‘I can’t ever repay you, even with the sea of diamonds.’ Readers will be enriched because Arisandy lets us inside his mind and heart.”

—Martha C. Merrill, professor of higher education, Kent State University

F. Arisandy has been teaching ESL/EFL for adolescents and adults for more than twelve years. He earned his master's degree in TESL from Kent State University in Ohio. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD and actively writes poems. His writing interests constitute issues of mental health, social justice, gender equity, affection, and nature. A previous poem entitled “In Mind” was featured in the anthology of Turning the Corner: Advent (2022).
