In this series of beautiful and accessible meditations, Fr. Jean-Miguel Garrigues examines death and eternal life in the light of Christian revelation. His work is the fruit of years of sustained theological reflection, as well as his own experience accompanying terminally ill cancer patients as a hospital chaplain. At the Hour of Our Death nourishes the vitally important theological virtue of hope. It encourages us to accompany the dying with compassion, love, and prayer, to live in communion with the saints of heaven and the holy souls of purgatory, and to wisely and serenely prepare ourselves for the day when we, too, will be called to accomplish, in the company of Jesus, the great Passover from this life to the house of our heavenly Father. The worldwide pandemic has brought end-of-life issues closer to many people than ever before. Fr. Jean Miguel's insights, lucidly rendered into English by Fr. Gregory Casprini, will serve as a help and consolation to many, strengthening their faith and encouraging them to pray for and accompany others.
“While the theme of this book, death and eternal life, is always
relevant, it is perhaps more pertinent now than ever in the face of
our current health crisis. These meditations have already consoled
and strengthened the faith of many people when confronting the
death or illness of someone they love. Now, by the grace of this
translation, they will provide spiritual nourishment to many
more.”
—Christoph Schönborn, archbishop of Vienna
“A look which is all at once bold, candid, and full of hope into
the ultimate reality which
awaits each and every one of us—death. An invitation to contemplate
the hour of our
death in order to discover its deepest meaning. Fr. Jean-Miguel
teaches us how to
live while remaining mindful of death, the purpose of which is to
serve as the gateway
to blessed eternity.”
—Kestutis Kevalas, Archbishop of Kaunas, Lithuania
“Fr. Jean-Miguel Garrigues . . . presents the mystery of
death as the culmination of our journey in this world, a loving
encounter with God, who asks us to freely accept the gift of
eternal life. This book encourages us to accompany the dying with
compassion . . . and to prepare ourselves for the day
when we, too, will be called to accomplish, in the company of
Jesus, the great ‘Passover’ from this life to the house of our
heavenly Father.”
—Dom Philippe Dupont, Abbot of Solesmes, France
“The most human thing that Jesus did was to die. Death unites us
all, even though we sometimes want to downplay or even ignore that
fact. That is why this beautiful new book is for everyone.
Insightful, touching, and, above all, real, At the Hour of Our
Death is an invitation to gaze upon this quintessentially human
part of our life with clear eyes, an open mind, and a trusting
heart. It is an essential book about an essential part of
everyone’s life.”
—James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage
