Henry Charles Lea (1825–1909) lived in Philadelphia as a historian, civic reformer, and political activist. Educated in Latin, Greek, and European languages he is known for his inquisitions and other works such as Studies in Church History: The Rise of the Temporal Power - Benefit of clergy - Excommunication, Ethical Values in History, and A History of Auricular Confession and Indulgences in the Latin Church.
