And high-profile cases are only a small portion of this widespread problem. Behind the scenes, there are many more cases of spiritual abuse that we will never hear about. It seems that some of the leaders we are producing—and, if we are honest, some of the leaders we are wanting—have characteristics that are either absent from, or even the very opposite of, the list of leadership characteristics laid down in Scripture.
Of course, most pastors and leaders are godly, wonderful people that don’t abuse their sheep. They shepherd their flocks gently and patiently. But we can’t ignore the growing number who do not.

Dr. Michael Kruger serves as the President and Samuel C. Patterson Professor of New Testament and Early Christianity at the Charlotte campus of Reformed Theological Seminary. He earned his Ph.D. under one of the world’s leading text-critical scholars, Larry W. Hurtado, at the University of Edinburgh, where he researched a parchment fragment of an apocryphal gospel, P.Oxy. 840. He graduated summa cum laude with a M.Div. from Westminster Seminary California, and received his B.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His research interests center upon Christian Origins, particularly the development of the New Testament canon within the context of the early church.
Prior to joining the RTS faculty, Dr. Kruger served in the pastorate for several years at Church of the Redeemer in Phoenix, AZ. There he developed a passion for preaching and ministry which he passes on to his students in the classroom. Dr. Kruger has been a member of ETS for 18 years serving on the editorial board of the Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, as well as vice-president in 2017 and president in 2019. He is the co-founder and co-chair of the ETS study group, “NT Canon, Textual Criticism and Apocryphal Literature.” In addition to his faculty duties, he currently serves part-time as the Pastor of Discipleship Training at Uptown Christ Covenant Church in downtown Charlotte.
He is the author of thirteen books, including Bully Pulpit: Confronting the Problem of Spiritual Abuse in the Church (Zondervan, 2022, Book of the Year” award from The Gospel Coalition, ministry category). His book Surviving Religion 101: Letters to a Christian Student on Keeping the Faith in College (Crossway, 2021, “Book of the Year”, Southwestern Baptist Journal of Theology, Worldview/Apologetics category), and Christianity at the Crossroads: How the Second Century Shaped the Future of the Church (SPCK, 2017; IVP Academic, 2018, “Book of the Year”, The Gospel Coalition, history and biography category).
Dr. Kruger regularly speaks, lectures, and teaches throughout the United States and the world—including conferences such as The Gospel Coalition and the Ligonier Conference. In addition to his academic publications, his popular-level articles have appeared in places like Modern Reformation, Tabletalk Magazine, The Gospel Coalition, and the Wall Street Journal. He also blogs regularly on his own website, Canon Fodder.
Dr. Kruger and his wife Melissa B. Kruger have been married for almost 25 years and have three children.

Michael J. Kruger widmet sich in Bully Pulpit einem Thema, das schmerzhaft aktuell und doch keineswegs neu ist: geistlicher Missbrauch in der Kirche. Gleich im ersten Kapitel zeigt er anhand bekannter Beispiele aus den letzten Jahrzehnten, dass dieses Phänomen kein modernes Problem ist, sondern bis in den Garten Eden zurückreicht. Neu ist lediglich, dass es heute offener thematisiert wird. Kruger beschreibt sehr treffend, welche kirchlichen Strukturen und Leitungsverständnisse missbräuchliche Leiter begünstigen: der „Celebrity Pastor“, die Fixierung auf Begabung statt Charakter, fehlende Rechenschaft und ein falsches Verständnis geistlicher Autorität. In Kapitel 2 definiert Kruger geistlichen Missbrauch präzise als: „Spiritual abuse is when a spiritual leader … wields his position of spiritual authority in such a way that he manipulates, domineers, bullies, and intimidates those under him as a means of maintaining his own power and control—even if he is convinced he is seeking biblical and kingdom-related goals.“ Anhand biblischer Beispiele (z. B. Saul) und kirchengeschichtlicher Bezüge (etwa zu Chrysostomus) arbeitet Kruger heraus, dass geistlicher Missbrauch dort entsteht, wo Leiter Verantwortung entweder nicht wahrnehmen oder sie pervertieren. Besonders eindrücklich ist seine Auslegung von Hesekiel 34 und den Pharisäern als Negativbeispiele und Jesus als Gegenbild: Charakter, Freundlichkeit und Liebe sind entscheidend – fehlen sie, ist Missbrauch vorprogrammiert. Im weiteren Verlauf beschreibt Kruger die „total depravity“ (Totale Verderbtheit) als Realität auch für geistliche Leiter und mahnt, Anschuldigungen ernst zu nehmen, statt vorschnell auf die Seite des Pastors zu springen. Besonders hilfreich ist Kapitel 5, in dem er erläutert, warum Matthäus 18 in Fällen geistlichen Missbrauchs oft nicht unmittelbar anwendbar ist, da manipulative Leiter das System leicht für sich nutzen können. Seine Auslegung der Pastoralbriefe und die Unterscheidung zwischen berechtigter Kritik und Verleumdung („gossip vs. slander“) sind klärend und praxisnah. Kapitel 6 schildert eindrücklich die emotionalen, körperlichen, zwischenmenschlichen und geistlichen Folgen geistlichen Missbrauchs – von Angst, Scham und Depressionen über Schlafstörungen bis hin zu Glaubenskrisen und Identitätsverlust. Besonders wertvoll ist Krugers seelsorgerlicher Ton, wenn er schreibt, dass die Kirche mit den Weinenden weinen und Langmut, Empathie und Selbstreflexion zeigen müsse. Das Schlusskapitel und der Epilog entwickeln schließlich einen praktischen „Schlachtplan“: sorgfältige Auswahl und Prüfung von Leitern, Teambuilding, Betonung von Charakter über Begabung und klare Exitstrategien im Fall von Missbrauch. Keine revolutionären Vorschläge, aber realistische und hilfreiche Ansätze, um Missbrauch vorzubeugen. Bully Pulpit ist kein reißerisches Buch, sondern ein kluges, bibelzentriertes und gut lesbares Werk, das das Thema geistlicher Missbrauch theologisch wie praktisch aufarbeitet. Krugers Stil ist klar, strukturiert und pastoral zugleich. Kein perfektes Buch, aber ein äußerst wichtiges – besonders für Leiter, Älteste und Gemeinden, die verstehen wollen, wie geistlicher Missbrauch entsteht und wie er verhindert werden kann.
