Overview

In the summer of 1976, the Baptist Sunday School Board invited Southern Baptist pastors to submit a sermon in one or more of five different categories. The categories were: Family Life—Sermons that interpret biblical standards for family living and provide guidance for living according to these standards.Evangelism—Sermons that confront the listener with the claim of God in Christ and call for response on the part of the listener.Outreach—Sermons that inspire and instruct church members to deliberate action in reaching persons who are not Christians.Missions—Sermons that help develop understanding of God’s universal plan of redemption and encourage the listener to become personally involved in the sharing of the gospel to all people.Discipleship—Sermons that present the biblical view of the church in terms of nature and mission and help church members to see more clearly the moral and social responsibility of Christian living in society. A few pastors submitted sermons for more than one category with the understanding that recognition could be given in one only. Sermons were received from pastors of small, rural churches and from pastors of some of the largest churches in the Convention. From the sermons received, 15 were selected for special recognition and printed in this book.
