Paralleling other writers of the time such as Sigmund Freud and Wilfred Trotter, Carpenter was known for proposing society puts pressure on the individual, leading to mental and physical illnesses. Carpenter died in 1929 and is interred in Mount Cemetery at Guildford in Surrey.
