“There is only one way, as it seems to me, in which any beneficial relation can be established between the Death of Christ and us, and it is that when He died He died for us, because ‘He bare our sins in His own body on the tree.’” (Page 98)

“the true confidence, which is faith in Christ; and the true diffidence, which is utter distrust of myself—are identical.” (Page 136)

“if God’s love to us thus suffuses a heart, then there follows the consciousness of that love” (Page 91)

“So, there being this antagonism and separation between God and man, the Gospel comes to deal with it, and proclaims that Jesus Christ has abolished the enmity, and by His death on the Cross has become our peace; and that we, by faith in that Christ, and grasping in faith His death, pass from out of the condition of hostility into the condition of reconciliation.” (Pages 62–63)

“We go to the rainbow’s end, and we find, not a pot of gold, but a huddle of cold, wet mist. There is one man that is entitled to say: ‘To-morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.’ Who is he? Only the man whose hope is in the Lord his God.” (Page 95)

Alexander Maclaren (1826–1910) was a Baptist preacher in England. He was educated at Stepney College, London, where he studied Hebrew and Greek and learned the discipline of expository preaching. He presided over Portland Chapel in Southhampton for 12 years, Union Chapel in Manchester for 45 years and was twice elected as president of the Baptist Union. His ministerial career spanned nearly 65 years from 1842–1905. MacLaren’s passion for the pulpit ministry was only surpassed by his pursuit of a life hid with God in Christ. He was revered by all who heard him speak and has served as an exemplar of expository preaching for all who have come after him.
