The Lord's Prayer is the only pattern prayer the Lord Jesus provided and is timeless in purpose and function. It indicates how we are to pray throughout our life in this present world. Its truths do not change. The necessity for us to be reminded of them is essential. The Lord's Prayer reminds us, at its very beginning, that true worship of God arises from a living relationship with him as our Father through our Lord Jesus Christ.
“Testings are different from temptations in that Satan tempts to bring out the evil, but God tests to bring out the good. Satan tempts in order to destroy; God tests to prove our sincerity and increase our strength. Satan attacks when we are unsuspecting and unprepared; God never tests without providing a way of escape so that we may be able to bear all he permits (1 Corinthians 10:13; 2 Peter 2:9).” (Page 138)
“The manna—the bread from heaven—taught lessons of daily dependence upon God, the sanctity of one day in seven for God (the Sabbath principle), and the sinfulness of selfish hoarding. The overall lesson was to teach them—and us—that ‘man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD’ (Deuteronomy 8:3). We are to trust not in the provision but in the Provider.” (Page 101)
“Fourthly, prayer is a means of gaining strength to do God’s will” (Page 93)
“A purpose of our praying this petition is that we should constantly warn ourselves of temptation’s reality and proximity, and our dependence upon our Heavenly Father’s support to overcome it. To be forewarned is to be forearmed. Neglecting to pray this petition we are likely to forget the daily spiritual battle in which we are engaged.” (Page 140)
“Bread sums up our basic material needs. It stands for all the daily benefits we require such as food and clothing, housing and heating, and so forth. We are asking here for life’s necessities.” (Page 99)
