Many new pastors in their first years of ministry feel unprepared for some of the practical aspects of their calling. The New Pastor’s Handbook is a guide to navigating these unfamiliar waters. With his hard-won wisdom, pastor Jason Helopoulos helps and encourages new pastors through the first years of ministry. He explains how to start out strong at a new church, persevere during difficult seasons of ministry, fight discouragement, navigate special ministry needs, and more.

Top Highlights

“Three essential elements help answer this question: internal call, manifest approval by God’s people, and the confirmation of the church.” (Page 28)

“Ministry, like baseball, is quite simple. It is nothing more than loving Christ, loving his people, and loving the Word.” (Page 58)

“‘The greatest need of my people is my own holiness.’1” (Page 76)

“I define effective preaching as the proclamation of biblical truth with passion, which is aimed at the affections of the people listening as they engage the truth of the text with their minds by the stirring of the Holy Spirit.” (Page 173)

“There are no interruptions in ministry, only God-ordained providential opportunities. The sooner a pastor realizes this truth, the better he will serve the people of God.” (Page 126)

Praise for the Print Edition

I wish I could have read this book when I was just starting out in ministry. This personal, practical volume will serve as a valuable guide for many young pastors, and quite a few older ones too.

—Kevin DeYoung, senior pastor, University Reformed Church

The joys of pastoral ministry are enormous, but so are the challenges. Helopoulos’ work is a welcome guide for new pastors as they confront the many difficult issues new pastors regularly face.

R. Albert Mohler Jr., president, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary

Where was this book when I was first ordained? Ultrapractical and stuffed full of timeless wisdom, this is a book I will recommend often and reread regularly.

—Tim Challies, pastor, Grace Fellowship Church
