This volume contains a collection of pre-Columbian ancient spiritual texts, the majority of which were conceived in the AD 950–1521 period. These sacred writings are attributed to the indigenous peoples of Central America, especially Mexico.
Miguel Leon-Portilla is a foremost authority on the language of the Aztecs and is professor emeritus at the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He cofounded the Estudios de Cultura Nahuatl—a center devoted to the study of the Aztec people—and serves as the editor of the center’s journal. He is the author of The Broken Spears: The Aztec Account of the Conquest of Mexico.
This volume includes a basic collection of the sacred texts, religious beliefs and practices of the Native American tribes that lived along the east coast of the United States and Canada.
Elisabeth Tooker is professor emerita of anthropology at Temple University. She specialized in the study of Native American culture.
