Overview

Part of the Western Theological Seminary Hale Lecture series—established by Bishop Charles Reuben Hale to discuss a handful of religious subjects, including the history of Eastern Churches—this text surveys the thought of important nineteenth-century Greek Orthodox theologians. Scholar and Episcopal priest Frank Gavin makes an adept guide, offering valuable information without assuming a wealth of background knowledge.

Introducing Protestants to writers such as Philippos Papadopoulos, the Archimandrite Chrysostom Papadopoulos, Zekos Rhôsse, Constantine Dyobouniotes, I.E. Mesolora, Antoniades, and Chrestos Androutsos, Gavin seeks to combat the notion that Greek Orthodox thought is static and insulated. He notes, that “if the present lectures serve but to introduce such men to American Churchmen they will not have been entirely in vain. If they serve to discount the venerable and deeply-rooted calumny that Orthodoxy is ‘intellectually sterile’, barren in the results of modern scholarship and theological research . . . and ‘not alive to the problems of the day,’ their purpose will have been fulfilled.” Containing the 1922 lectures, this volume provides valuable insight into early nineteenth-century Orthodox scholarship and the growing movement toward promoting meaningful conversations and understanding across denominational lines.
