Overview

With refreshing respect for the reader, Delbert Hillers lays out the evidence for his case cautiously and asks the readers to form their own decisions. He very sensitively explicates the many figures of speech and collects a most helpful set of biblical passages which illuminate the text. His skill in saying much in a few, well-chosen words is impressive.

Top Highlights

“In either case, it is likely that by this messianic prophecy the prophet implies a rejection of the current ruler, as has been argued recently by Rohland.3 To be sure, it can be read as a reminder to the monarch of his glorious origins and future, or as a prediction of the great future of someone to come from his line. But on the whole it seems more natural to take the oracle as referring to someone other than the ruling king, and thus by implication as a rejection of the Judean king.” (Page 66)

“In fact the whole intent is to reject the cultic. The speaker is an individual, a representative of the whole benighted people who imagine that ritual is a solution when it is part of the problem.” (Page 78)

“‘Although these scholars all agree on a complex history of redaction which passed through many stages, the analyses are so strikingly different that no common conclusions have emerged.’” (Page 3)

“ has been argued, with some force, that this is not a clear reference to conversion of the nations” (Page 50)

“Micah evidently regarded this as a kind of sacrilege, because it is done at the cost of blood” (Page 48)
