Top Highlights

“I believe that one of the fundamental insights of the Book of Job is that theodicy is always a losing game. God cannot be justified, by Reason, reasons, or reasoning. The only argument for God is God Himself.… No matter how much a man has suffered or received in his suffering, it does not qualify him to serve as God’s attorney.’” (Page 62)

“Those who would speak for God, especially if they speak to a man who is suffering, should not pretend that they really see things as God does.” (Page 43)

“Along with the decline of moral authority among these three men, there is a corresponding decline in politeness, as though each man is obliged to raise the volume of his voice in inverse proportion to his sense of assurance.” (Pages 26–27)

“The story of Job is thus interpreted through the singular mystery of intercessory prayer.” (Page 9)

“Job—namely, the theme of the just man who is tried in his faith.” (Page 7)

Ultimately, all of us identify with one or another aspect of Job’s life. As life inevitably informs and as this book intuitively confirms, one cannot sing Psalms without having read Job!
