In this work, Dr. Brand contributes a unique complementarian expression of Reformed spirituality, in order to stimulate a spiritual renewal in the contemporary Reformed tradition. Using a distinctively feminine approach in an arena monopolized by male theologians, Brand anchors corporate and personal spirituality upon the unio mystica, returning to a Calvinistic appreciation of the Christian life.
Grounding Reformed spirituality on the “marital union” between Christ and the church, a corporate portrait of the church is explored. Critical of the neglect of women in Reformed church life and practice, the author calls the tradition to reform; proposing an intentional complementarian role for women that can practically and spiritually profit the whole church body. The book culminates with an initial tracing of a “Reformed feminine spirituality” which is pastorally relevant to women, and encourages a renewed experiential enjoyment of Christ for both men and women.

I know of no book quite like this. Brand presents a highly effective blend of doctrinal theology and spirituality that is biblical, contemporary, historical, and pastoral. She investigates the doctrine of union with Christ and its implications for Reformed feminine spirituality, and does so from a position that heartily respects the text of Scripture and the tradition of interpretation within which she works. Natalie Brand earned her PhD from University of Wales/Trinity St. David in 2010. She teaches female spirituality and supervises doctoral students at WEST (Wales Evangelical School of Theology) in partnership with Chester University. Natalie taught systematic and historical theology for many years at Union School of Theology and still supervises research there. She has authored several books, including Complementarian Spirituality: Reformed Women and Union with Christ and Prone to Wander: Grace for the Lukewarm and Apathetic.
