Overview

Witness in the Dust is a novel about a young Haitian woman’s resilience, faith, and the unbreakable human spirit in a democracy torn apart by moral struggles. When earthquakes and hurricanes devastate Port-au-Prince, Celine, full of idealism, faith, and quiet strength, seeks a better life in the United States. Celine travels to Chicago, where she joins fellow immigrants fighting for dignity in a system that is unwelcoming. Drawing on resources from her community and church, she becomes a witness and an advocate for justice. Before she can claim her place in the promised land, she must reconcile her beliefs about equality, democracy, citizenship, and the unkept promises of sanctuary for people yearning to breathe free. A story of courage against all odds, Witness in the Dust is a work of political fiction that sketches a vision of the enduring strength of an immigrant community, a church fighting for justice, and the unyielding spirit of those who refuse to be broken. Lyrical and analytical, the novel explores equality, democracy, ideological divisions, and whether reconciliation is possible in a world coated in the dust of decaying promises.

Dr. Reed has captured the struggle of many minorities coming to the ‘land of the free and the home of the brave.’ Our country of origin becomes blurred, and the realities of the struggle are similar and real. Celine’s journey is an inspiring witness to what can be accomplished when determination is in the driver’s seat. Nothing can happen if nothing happens and Celine has shown us that we can all contribute to change.

With joy, I endorse this book by Lorrie C. Reed. She covers the young woman’s journey with eloquence, precision, compassion, and passion. As I read her story, it was as if I became intertwined with the Haitian woman. . . . A must-study for theological students and pastoral care organizations involved in justice work, while at the same time understanding the connections between doing Jesus and doing justice.

——Sharon Ellis Davis, Assistant Visiting Professor of Theology and Ethics, Lexington Theological Seminary, Lexington, Kentucky

A needed tract for these times. In this compelling meditation on memory, migration, faith, and belonging Lorrie Reed provides a Haitian migration memoir by turns violent, hopeful, resistant, and resilient. Her fiction underscores the fact that whatever America might still become is carried in the hearts and hands of migrants and the communities of care that sustain them, not in the cynical deployment of ICE squads against the innocent, nor in the cowardly policies of nativist governments. This is a well-wrought and timely story, providing a kind of catechism for a more humane society.

——Ken Sawyer, Professor of Church History, McCormick Theological Seminary
