Overview

A Christian exploration of the LDS Church that seeks to understand, not just refute

Many Christians struggle to form an accurate picture of the beliefs, practices, and attraction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. 40 Questions About Mormonism addresses how the Mormon faith developed, what it teaches, and how it differs from traditional Christianity.

Author Kyle Beshears draws on years of dialogue with LDS Church members to ask and answer the most pertinent questions for understanding today’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, covering history, sources of authority, doctrines shared with Christianity, unique doctrines, and more. Among the questions addressed are:

  • Is Mormonism just an American religion?
  • How do Latter-day Saints view the Bible?
  • What is the origin of the priesthood?
  • What is the Latter-day Saints’ view of Jesus Christ?
  • Why does Mormonism have temples?
  • What are common concerns Latter-day Saints have about traditional Christianity?

These historically and biblically insightful answers allow readers to better understand both traditional Christian faith and the distinctive elements of Mormonism. Readers will feel more confident forming friendships with LDS adherents, viewing them as neighbors whom God loves and witnessing to them as such. Mormon here. I know Mr. Beshears to be a kind, genuine, and good-faith actor. From what I've read based on the excerpts he has posted, this is a very good introduction that you should invest in. I look forward to the discussions this book will generate in both LDS and non-LDS circles.

First, I feel it worth a mention that this work ought to be understood as something of an introduction to Mormonism for the prospective buyer curious about the book. For Evangelicals, this is likely appropriate — as most have little to no awareness of Mormonism beyond a surface level understanding on a few points. So for those curious about the religion & are wanting to learn more, this is a book worth reading if for no other reason than the fact the last few questions cover several important realities of dialogue that is faithful to Christ, and seeks to love God & love neighbor. Simply put, if you want to reach the LDS people making jokes about magic underwear or screaming “you’re in a cult!” may give the hearer a jolt, is that the ideal way to engage? Beshears argues that it is not. For LDS, they may find this book disappointing in that it does not go into extensive details or give much quarter to the numerous speculative apologetic positions for various LDS claims. I feel this is appropriate, given that the author elected not to be overly-polemic with extensive refutations; but intended to highlight areas of overlap as well as where the gaps may lie on various issues. If you’re new to Mormon studies, this is worth a read! For those who are not, it is still a helpful resource you can recommend to others.

The author combines a deep knowledge of his subject area with pastoral care. This book is a must read.
