About Dwight L. Moody

Dwight L. Moody (1837–1899) was born in Northfield, Mass. His father died soon after, and Moody was forced to work to support the family at an early age. In 1854, Moody took a job at his uncles’ shoe store and one of the conditions upon employment was that he should regularly attend his uncle’s church. It was at this church where his conversion took place. He moved to Chicago in 1856, and after working as a successful Sunday-school teacher and building a membership of 1,500 pupils, the Illinois Street Church was formed. He then began his revival work, which would become his life-long endeavor.

Beginning in 1872, Moody would travel and preach in Great Britain, winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. When he returned to America, he had invitations all over the country for speaking engagements. For the next 20 years, Moody would travel the globe, packing churches and revival halls with those wanting to hear him preach. He was honest, preached a Calvinistic creed which he accepted with all his heart, and was a master of an effective style. During all of his travels, he found time to write and publish numerous works.

Moody was also known for the educational institutions he started. The Illinois Street Church he started was later renamed in his honor to Moody Church. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society for the education and training of Christian workers. This institution was renamed the Moody Bible Institute in his honor after he passed away in 1899.

Top Highlights

“You know, when a man is going up in a balloon, he takes in sand as ballast, and when he wants to mount a little higher, he throws out some of it, and then he will mount a little higher; he throws out a little more ballast, and he mounts still higher; and the more he throws out the higher he gets, and so the more we have to throw out of the things of this world the nearer we get to God. Let go of them; let us not set our hearts and affections on them, but do what the Master tells us—lay up for ourselves treasures in heaven.” (Pages 21–22)

“It is a great deal easier to believe that man was made after the image of God, than to believe, as some young men and women are being taught now, that he is the offspring of a monkey.” (Page 9)

“The longest time man has to live has no more proportion to eternity than a drop of dew has to the ocean.” (Page 12)

“What the Bible says about heaven is just as true as what it says about everything else. The Bible is inspired. What we are taught about heaven could not have come to us in any other way than by inspiration. No one knew anything about it but God, and so if we want to find out anything about it we have to turn to His Word. Dr. Hodge, of Princeton, says that the best evidence of the Bible being the Word of God is to be found between its own two covers. It proves itself. In this respect it is like Christ, whose character proclaimed the divinity of His person. Christ showed Himself more than man by what He did. The Bible shows itself more than a human book by what it says.” (Pages 7–8)

“We believe it is inspired because there is nothing in it that could not have come from God. God is wise, and God is good. There is nothing in the Bible that is not wise, and there is nothing in it that is not good.” (Page 8)

Dwight L. Moody

Dwight Lyman Moody (1837–1899) is considered one of the nineteenth century’s greatest evangelists. After moving to Chicago in 1856, Moody began a Sunday School class, the attendance of which quickly grew to over 1,500. This growth allowed Moody to form the Illinois Street Church.

As Moody traveled to preach in Great Britain, he began winning the esteem of many prominent evangelicals. For the next 20 years, Moody traveled the world, speaking, preaching, and finding time to write as well. In 1886, Moody established the Chicago Evangelization Society (later renamed the Moody Bible Institute) to educate and train Christian workers.

The Works of Dwight L. Moody (26 vols.) contains hundreds of his sermons and addresses, plus his works on heaven, grace, prayer, the 10 Commandments, Christian living, and biblical characters. He is also the author of Arrows and Anecdotes, included in Goodly Heritage Library: Shelf Two.
