Macarius of Egypt was a fourth-century Egyptian Christian monk and hermit. Considered a saint in the Roman Catholic, Eastern Catholic, and Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches, he founded a monastery that bears his name and is now in possession of the Coptic Orthodox Church. This collection of writings is a favorite work on Orthodox spirituality and monastic struggles, and it provides great insight into the life of early Christian monks and ascetics.
