Overview

This set of detailed commentaries provides valuable exegetical, historical, cultural, and linguistic information on the original text. Over the years this series has been instrumental in shedding light on the Scriptures so that translators all over the world could complete the important task of putting God’s Word into the many languages spoken in the world today. Over the years church leaders and Bible readers have found the UBS Handbooks to be useful for their own study, since many of the issues Bible translators must address when trying to communicate the Bible’s message to modern readers are the ones Bible students must address when approaching the Bible text as a part of their own private study and devotions.

Top Highlights

“Suffice it to say that the mention of this term is not primarily to define the nature of Scripture but to give a reason why Scripture is useful and effective for the functions that are mentioned.” (Page 236)

“The words translated complete and equipped are synonyms: the first means being qualified for some function (so NRSV ‘proficient,’ NABR ‘competent,’ REB ‘capable’), and the second refers to making someone fully adequate or sufficient for some task.” (Page 237)

“Literally the verb can be translated ‘be at home,’ which defines the depth and extent to which faith has become a vital and integral part of their lives.” (Page 171)

“The word for rekindle occurs only here in the whole New Testament; literally it describes the act of reviving a fire that has gone out.” (Page 173)

“First, it contains eighteen items, six of which are found nowhere else in the New Testament. Secondly, there seems to be no coherence in the list, unlike that found in 1 Tim 1:9–10 or Gal 5:19–21. Could this incoherence be deliberate, in order to portray a society that has degenerated into moral anarchy? The only semblance of coherence is that the list begins with love of self (verse 2) and ends with false piety, which seems to say that people disguise their selfishness by means of outward religious observances. The rest of the list are vices that seem to be end products of love of self. The message that comes out is that love of self results in moral laxity, lack of concern for others, and neglect of duty to God.” (Pages 221–222)
