Reconstructing Paul’s journey to Rome, day by day

In This Way We Came to Rome: With Paul on the Appian Way guides readers along Paul’s 150-mile journey to face trial before the Roman emperor (Acts 28). Authors Glen L. Thompson and Mark Wilson draw from both ancient records and modern research to offer the most complete account available of Paul’s journey along the ancient world’s most famous road—the Appian Way. In addition to geographical and historical insights, the authors provide numerous images, maps, and GPS coordinates, allowing the reader to experience Paul’s journey and better understand the ancient world in which he spread the gospel.

Praise for In This Way We Came to Rome

A model guide to the journey by road from Puteoli to Rome during the early Roman empire—clear, engaging, up-to-date, with excellent maps and photos. Let’s go!

—Richard Talbert, Research Professor of History, University of North Carolina; editor of Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World

In This Way We Came to Rome charts for us in great detail, Paul’s journey to Rome as recorded at the end of the Acts of the Apostles. The maps and charts and pictures provide us with a rich resource, not available in one source before now. I highly recommend this work as an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the work of our earliest Christian historian.

—Ben Witherington III, Amos Professor of NT for Doctoral Studies, Asbury Theological Seminary

The book will be invaluable for New Testament scholars and classical scholars alike, and not least for the average reader who intends to retrace Paul’s steps on a visit to Italy: using this volume as guide will ensure that such readers are travelers and not mere tourists.

—Eckhard J. Schnabel, Mary F. Rockefeller Distinguished Professor of New Testament Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

In this richly-illustrated book, Thompson and Wilson escort us along the 150 miles of the Via Campana Consularis and the famous Via Appia. In so doing, they have also given students of the early Christian mission and the Roman world a valuable window into travel on Rome’s famous system of roads.

—David A. deSilva, Trustees’ Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Greek, Ashland Theological Seminary
